Further details from Mrs J Smith (Learning Support), Mrs Greenlee
This is primarily a group activity for those whose first language is not English. The emphasis will be on conversation, socialising, building confidence, games and having fun, whilst learning and practising the rudiments of English. There will also be opportunities for pupils to engage in one to one conversation with members of staff or with a peer group ‘buddy’. The plan is that activities within the group will in some measure be determined by pupils themselves and reflect their aptitudes and interests.
As vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and confidence grow it is envisaged that the group will tackle more specific language based tasks which will support and enhance their academic work. It is hoped that a cultural dimension will also develop which may well extend to activities which take the group off campus exploring the local area.
