These guidelines are in place to ensure the welfare and well being of everyone in the House. Our aim at Heyworth is that everyone will enjoy and profit from their time here.

  • Always remember thoughtfulness and consideration for one another.
  • Respect should be shown at all times to every member of Heyworth House, staff and pupils.
  • Comment and suggestions may be placed in the comments box in the Duty room.
  • The person on duty must be informed if you leave the House for any activity and you should report back immediately on return. You must use the key-ring system by the back door.
  • Every member of the House has duties to perform and these should be performed conscientiously.
  • You should feel free to approach Mr or Mrs Allan if you have something to discuss. All staff in the House are happy to help you and you can approach them with matters of concern. Any member of staff at school can be approached if you have a problem in particular Mrs Jean Dunnet the School Nurse and Mrs Kay Robertson the School Child Protection Officer. Please remember members of staff cannot promise confidentiality, but all matters will be dealt with sensitively.

MORNINGS

  • Wake-up bells are at 7.20, 7.30 and 7.40am; you should be out of bed by the 3 rd bell.
  • Seniors (Form IV – VI) take priority for morning showers between 6.45 – 7.45am; all others should shower in the evening.
  • Monday to Friday, girls up to Form IV leave for breakfast between 7.45 – 7.55 am. Seniors are to leave by 8.10am; breakfast is not served after 8.15am. Please do not be late! All Boarders are to be back in the House by 8.30am. Breakfast on Sundays is between 8.45 and 9.00am for all Boarders. There is often a “lie-in” on Saturdays and breakfast is provided in - House.
  • Dorm checks by the nominated Seniors will be completed by 8.30am. This inspection will check that;
    • your bed is made
    • curtains are open
    • the floor is tidy
    • clean clothes have been put away and dirty washing is in the appropriate basket
    • all surfaces are neat and tidy.
  • School uniform checks by the duty member of staff will be completed by 8.30am. This is to ensure that the uniform is satisfactory, with top buttons done up, shirt tails tucked in, no jewellery worn and any make-up is discreet.
  • You should be out of the House by 8.35am to arrive at registration by 8.40am. The House is open from 12.30 – 1.15pm should you require to collect anything for school.
  • Days and times of early morning swimming will be posted on the notice board.

BEDROOMS

  • Personal items e.g. clock, photos, ornaments are allowed on the surfaces in your room, but please remember to have consideration for the staff who clean it.
  • Keep drawers and cupboards in your room, lockers and shoe storage areas tidy, as they may be inspected (but always in your presence).
  • Food or drink is not permitted in rooms, apart from a tumbler of water at bedtime. Any tumblers should be promptly returned to the kitchen.

LIGHTS OUT

  • Lights out is at the following times:

Form I 9.15pm
Form II 9.30pm
Form III 9.45pm
Form IV 10.15pm
Forms V & VI should be in their own rooms by 10.30pm .

DINING HALL

  • The member of staff on duty will distribute dining-hall passes before breakfast. They must be handed into the dining-hall at lunch, or at breakfast if collecting a packed meal. The pupil responsible for the passes should collect them at tea and return them to the Duty Room that evening.
  • Anyone forgetting or losing her pass, will be given a temporary pass by the member of staff on duty at the dining hall.
  • Uniform must be worn to the dining-hall except for tea, and at weekends.
  • Packed lunches/teas or plated meals should be requested from the dining-hall on a weekly basis. This is done on a Wednesday evening. If an unexpected mid-week tea or lunch is required, ask the duty member of staff to arrange this. It is your responsibility to collect packed meals. If a plated meal has been requested, you must return any crockery (clean) on your next visit.

PREP TIME

  • Prep times are as follows:
      • Forms I - III Mon – Thurs 6-7.30pm. Sun 10.45am-12.15pm
      • Forms IV- VI Mon – Thurs 6-8pm. Sun 10.45am-1245pm

SUPPER TIME

  • Supper times are as follows:
      • Forms I - III 7.30-8pm
      • Forms IV- VI 8-9.30pm
  • Each girl is responsible for putting her supper things in the dishwasher. The person on dishwasher duty will check the kitchen is tidy and switch the dishwasher on after supper.
  • After school the kitchen may be used for making tea, juice, toast etc. You must make sure the kitchen is tidy before going to the dining-hall for tea.

LAUNDRY

  • Laundry rules must be observed.
  • Each girl is provided with 2 dhobi bags for underwear. Please do not mix light with dark clothing. These should be put out nightly in the baskets upstairs.
  • All Sports gear, except socks, should be put in the basket in the downstairs cloakroom.
  • All clothing must be named.
  • Civvies should be put in the basket provided.
  • Kilts and blazers should be left in the laundry on Friday night or Saturday morning to be cleaned, mended and pressed.

FOOTWEAR

  • Outdoor shoes should be removed on entering the House and neatly stored in your shoe locker. Under no circumstances should muddy footwear be worn in the house. It should be left to dry on the rack by the back door and cleaned. Corps boots are not to be cleaned in bedrooms.
  • School shoes are to be polished before supper. This will be checked regularly.
  • Shoe lockers are for storing footwear only – all others items should be kept neatly in the appropriate place.

VISITORS

  • Visitors are allowed in after school and at weekends, provided they adhere to the rules of the House. No visitors are permitted before morning school. It is your responsibility to ensure that your friends are aware of these rules, and no other member of the House is to be made to feel uncomfortable owing to the presence of your visitor.
  • All visitors must be signed in and out in the Duty Book and on the blackboard by the back door. The member of staff on duty must be asked for permission first.
  • A visitor must be either a relative/guardian or a member of Dollar Academy. No visitor is allowed upstairs apart from the start and end of term.
  • Boarders from other Houses may visit but only with the consent of both sets of House Parents.

WEEKENDS/DAYS OUT

  • Letters giving permission for days or weekends out, detailing travel arrangements and acceptance of responsibility are required from your parents/guardian and the responsible adult in the house in which you will be staying. These should be received in plenty of time before the proposed weekend or day out, ideally by Wednesday evening for a weekend out.
  • Forms III & IV may go to Stirling at weekends however, lunch or tea must be taken in the dining-hall.
  • Forms V & VI may go to Edinburgh, Glasgow or Stirling at weekends. No pupil may visit Edinburgh on a Home rugby International.

TELEPHONE

  • Please do not be selfish when using the House telephone.
  • Use of the House phone or mobile phone is not permitted after 10.30pm.
  • Calls are not to be accepted or made during prep time.
  • Phone cards for use with the House phone are available from the member of staff on duty for £5 each.

COMPUTER USE

  • No food or drink should be taken into the computer room.
  • Anyone using a laptop should be aware these will be periodically inspected to ensure no unsuitable material has been stored on them.

TV/VCR/DVD USE

  • Both common rooms are equipped with these. The suitability of videos etc will be decided by Mr & Mrs Allan or the member of staff in charge. As a general rule, age guidelines will be adhered to.

POST

  • The day’s post is hung up on the Duty Room line for your collection.

REQUESTS FOR MONEY

  • Cheque order forms are available on the Duty Room line. These should be passed to Mr or Mrs Allan when completed.
  • Seniors are expected to fund school social events such as dance tickets, the purchase of Year Books etc. themselves.

VALUABLES

  • Any large sums of money should be handed in for safekeeping.
  • Passports, tickets and any valuables should be handed to Mr or Mrs Allan on arrival. These will be kept safely until required.
  • Every boarder has a lockable safe or cupboard for the storage of small valuables.

HEALTH ISSUES

  • If you feel unwell tell the duty member of staff. If you feel unwell during the night you should ring the bell at the top of the front stairs. If you are unable to do this yourself, ask someone to do it for you.
  • It is suggested you do not keep any medicines yourself apart from an inhaler. Prescribed medicines should be handed to a duty member of staff. These will be kept securely and administered when required.
  • Appointments with a doctor, dentist or optician can be arranged for you.

FIRE REGULATIONS

  • Please refer to separate fire orders.
  • On hearing the fire alarm you must leave the House as quickly as possible by the nearest exit and assemble on the gravel in the back garden in year groups.
  • No candles, incense sticks or other flammable objects are permitted in bedrooms.
  • Electrical appliances, in particular hair straighteners and dryers, must be left switched off and unplugged.
