Parents' Comments
"This is my first year in Dollar Academy.
I have found the living to be very easy. The atmosphere
in the house couldn't be
better:
everyone is very friendly towards you and you don't have
to worry about being accepted.
My house is a top standard. Most of us have our own rooms
and you share a shower room with one other person. We have
pool and table tennis, playstation2, DVD players and computers
with internet access. The community feeling in the house
creates an atmosphere of being part of a big family."
Form VI pupil from Germany - recently
joined
"When I first joined the house I was taken by the mature
atmosphere and the encouragement of independence that is
subtly
made
by the house staff. Coming from a 'junior' house the contrast
was extremely apparent. This atmosphere brings a more adult
nature to the house and everyone seems to carry a set of
expectations and standards given to them only by the fact
that they are a McNabb boy. This was very noticeable in
my first few days in the house; instead of moaning about
the duties the boys seemed to understand and appreciate
the purpose they served in a broader context; this showed
the feeling of mutual understanding and respect between
pupils and staff."
Form V Scottish pupil - long term boarder
"Since joining McNabb I have had the privilege of experiencing
the wonderful community that is Dollar boarding. We, as
a house, have been on many social ventures; theatre trips,
cinema, shopping excursions and meals out, not to mention
our
numerous
dining in nights. We are also suitably entertained in the
house with a pool table, table tennis table, TV, DVD, PS2
and several computers with internet access. Our houseparents
are always ready to chat and listen to our concerns and,
together with our two house tutors, our black Labrador (Oswald)
and Freddie and Abi, help to give the wonderful homely feel
to McNabb.
The house is newly refurbished, and has been redesigned
so that almost all the rooms are singles and there is a
bathroom to every 2 or 3 boarders. As most of the rooms
are single they provide a sanctuary if you need peace and
quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of our busy Common
Room.
Our Common Room is a large open plan room with breakfast
bar, pool and table tennis tables and a DVD entertainment
system, so it is a brilliant place to relax with your friends
after school and in the evening after prep. The common room
is also where we have supper and where we sometimes have
breakfast on a Saturday. We have house meeting here every
Monday, we can bring up any points or problems we have to
our house parents. All in all I feel that McNabb house is
an experience that everyone would love."
