H.M. Frigate Unicorn and RRS Discovery
As part of their Journeys/Treasure Island topic, the whole of Prep 5 travelled to Dundee at the beginning of March to visit two famous ships. During the course of the morning, the pupils had a wonderful time exploring the research ship, RRS Discovery, and visiting the related exhibition. They then travelled a short distance along the quay to board H.M. Frigate Unicorn where lunch was eaten in a real pirate setting – down on the mess deck surrounded by ropes, barrels and hammocks! Excitement mounted as the guides led the ‘young pirates’ along narrow passageways in the hull of the war ship. Cannons, nautical artefacts and gruesome tales also fuelled the children’s imaginations and they were not short of ideas to write in their thank you letters afterwards.

Dear Bob,
Thank you for showing us around the Unicorn. It was a fantastic experience. I enjoyed seeing the cat of nine tails. I would hate to have to make it and then have it happening to me! I also thought that the boatswain’s starter was very scary.
I also felt like a real pirate when we had our lunch down on the mess deck. I thought it was amazing that they painted the wood red so that when they did operations on the operating table, they wouldn’t have to clean off the blood stains!
There was certainly a lifetime’s supply of ropes in the hold. Those cannons were fantastic. I would not like to be on the enemy ship when they were firing! I liked it when we crawled through the bottom of the ship. On the top deck, the bell was very loud. I don’t think it would be nice at all if that was rung every half hour at my house! The steering wheel was very big. I thought it was a bit strange how it was double-sided.
I thought that the snitch-snitch tale was very gory. Imagine having your nose stitched to your hammock, then having your body tied up and thrown overboard! The statue of the unicorn, at the front of the ship, was very big and it was intriguing to see the hatch where people were escorted to if under attack.
Thank you very much again for your time.
Yours sincerely,
Darcy Elles (Prep 5H)

Dear Mr Kelly,
Thank you for showing us around the Discovery. I had a great time. Even though I had been there before, I still enjoyed it. I found it amazing to learn that the Discovery was actually stronger than the Titanic.
On the ship, I liked the nickname for the mushroom vents – ankle bashers. I think that is a pretty good name for them for they did just that! The compass was interesting because it had a helmet for when it got rainy and you could look through a little glass window. I thought it was pretty clever how, for it to work, you needed some sort of liquid and the crew knew water would freeze so they used alcohol which wouldn’t freeze. The crow’s nest looked scary. I wouldn’t want to go up there even though you’d get a good view!
I liked the models of the people. In the galley, the black cat was a bit freaky. All the models were really realistic. The hold was also interesting. I wouldn’t really want to live on mustard, meat and spices. I didn’t like the look of the hammocks even though I have never been in one; they didn’t look comfortable. I liked the music that the crew listened to; it was a good jazzy sound with all their fancy instruments. The games the men played looked entertaining. If I went on a long voyage, I would probably play chess.
I liked the Discovery and I am looking forward to going again.
Yours sincerely,
Sam Ward

Dear Bob,
Thank you for showing us around the Unicorn yesterday. It was brilliant! When I first walked on, I felt as if I was a real pirate. My favourite bit was when we got to have lunch on the mess deck. When I was eating it, it was so dark that I could not see if a rat or a worm was crawling in my food! I have to admit, I was a bit scared.
I also enjoyed the part when you told us about the cat with nine tails. I would certainly not want to be hit with it! The wonderful model of the ship was very detailed. It had every little thing.
The top deck of the ship was also one of my favourite bits because everything on it was interesting. I did not know the wheel of the ship was so big! I thought it was smaller than me, not bigger. Now, that bell was SO loud that my ear nearly fell off. I thought it was quite big. I would definitely not like to be a pirate and listen to that thing every morning.
Listening to you talk about the snitch-snitch just made my tummy bump. I didn’t think it was nice at all, whether you were stitching or getting stitched. Either way would be terrifying. Seeing the captain’s room was also a bit frightening, but it was amazing to know that I was in his room.
Thank you so much. I really enjoyed the trip.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Bob,
Thank you for showing us around the Unicorn yesterday. I much appreciated your kindness in opening the ship especially for us. Eating our lunch on the mess deck was fantastic. It was very dark and gloomy and I was afraid that there were spiders in my food!
It was interesting to know about the cat of nine tails. I didn’t know that all the sayings we say today came from that! The story about the sailors in their hammocks was gross! I would hate to have a snitch-snitch through my nose and be thrown overboard!
Going down to the bottom of the ship made me feel like a real pirate, crawling through the narrow passageways. I wouldn’t have been surprised if a rat had suddenly jumped out! Imagine the cannons coming from Falkirk. That is really close to us. It was amazing that the officers’ table was used for operating on. It must have been horrible to dine on after that! When you rang the bell, it was so loud. If you kept ringing it again and again, I would probably be deaf.
All in all, the ship was fascinating. I loved it. Thank you once again for showing us round.
Yours sincerely,
Claire McLeish (Prep 5H)
