Junior 2 - Form II Trip to Clères, Normandy, Easter 2009

At the end of the Spring term, 36 pupils and 4 staff spent a wonderful week in France, staying with families in a small village north of Rouen, and enjoying four days in the region.  On our trip to Paris, we had a coach tour of the main attractions, a boat trip on the Seine and climbed the Eiffel Tower, where we enjoyed the views of the city in the sun, before heading back down for crêpes and ice-creams.  Our Normandy day included the 900 year old Bayeux tapestry and the WWII site at Pointe du Hoc, where we visited the remains of the German clifftop gun emplacements and explored the huge shell-holes.   After a moving visit to the American cemetery at Colleville, we went down to Omaha Beach.  In the sun it was hard to imagine the scene 65 years ago.  Our day in Rouen allowed us to admire the 15th century streets, the cathedral and Joan of Arc’s church, with shopping, a picnic and bowling completing our afternoon.  Our last day was spent in Disneyland, where the rides and shopping proved to be a highlight!  On our way back to Zeebrugge we stopped off in Bruges for a quick visit and boat trip on the canals.  Both staff and pupils had a wonderful week, friendships were made and many hope to return once again to Clères next year.
