COMPUTING
HIGHLIGHTS
-
We provide a range of courses to help pupils become computer literate. They are encouraged to become 'tool creators and designers', not just 'tool users'.
-
Pupils have the opportunity to develop their own software in several courses.
COURSE INFORMATION
Form I: All pupils take BEC, a course that combines elements of Computing, Economics and Business Management. They receive a basic grounding in the use of mainstream computer applications such as Word and PowerPoint, as well as learning some essential computing knowledge and jargon. They learn about the Software Development Process and the simulation software Crocodile Clips provides an interesting and simple introduction to programming.
Form II: The second year BEC course is part of a rotation where each class receives two six week blocks of Computing delivered by the Computing Department. We prepare the ground for the Intermediate 2 Computing course by exploring the fundamentals of computer systems, software development and multimedia technology. The course, for example, introduces how computer networks operate. A new programming language SCRATCH allows animations to be developed using a visual storyboard. A taster course in Visual Basic is also included.
Intermediate 2: This course is a very practical course that covers far more than simply learning how to use current hardware and software. It consists of three units, Computer Systems, Software Development and Multimedia Technology. It complements the compulsory H IT Core Skill course in Forms III and IV and, indeed, most other courses available in Forms III and IV.
Examples of some pupils work in Intermediate II Computing
Higher IT Core Skill: This is a compulsory course for all Form III and IV pupils. Building on IT skills, it leads to certification in the Higher Core Skill in Information Technology. The possibility of delivering some of this course using the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment is currently being explored. This would allow pupils access to course materials from a home computer.
Higher Computing: Pupils receive an in-depth look at computer systems and spend more time developing problem-solving, logical and creative skills in Software Development. The department at present does Multimedia Technology as the third unit. This enjoyable and interesting unit covers graphical and video applications including multimedia authoring packages and web design.
Advanced Higher Computing: This is a far more practical course than the Higher course as pupils need to complete their own software project (counting 40% towards the final grade). They also continue their study of Software Development and Computer Systems. |
