National Galleries of Scotland Poetry Competition

Three Dollar pupils in Form IV have been named as winners in the National Galleries of Scotland poetry competition.
Taylor Watson-Fargie was a runner-up in the 12-15 age group for his poem ‘My Biological Dwelling’. Michael Hunter received a Special Merit in the 12-15 age group for his poem ‘The Blessed Hellride’; the judge commented that the structure of his poem was particularly impressive and seemed inspired by the Dada movement. Catriona Jardine has won again this year; she received a Special Merit in the 16-18 age group for her poem ‘Why Does Man Never Learn?’
To enter, pupils must write a poem or short story inspired by a piece of artwork in the National Galleries of Scotland. This year over 850 entries were received from young people living throughout Scotland. A ceremony with readings was held on the 17th of April at the National Gallery in Edinburgh, and a book will be created later in the year using funding from the SQA. Our pupils are encouraged to enter competitions and think of themselves as writers. These members of Form IV are to be commended on this impressive accolade.
