RUGBY AT DOLLAR
Dollar has long and illustrious rugby history and a photograph of the 1887 XV hangs in the Rector’s study. More recently, the 1st XV were Scottish Schools Champions for three years in succession between 2004-2006 under the outstanding coaching of John Foster who taught for 31 years at Dollar. The 1st XV did not lose a home game between 2000 and 2007. The school has produced internationalists at all levels for many years and current Scotland players Rory Lawson, John Barclay and Graeme Morrison all attended Dollar Academy.
The 1st XV coaches are Mr Steve Newton, Dollar’s Head of Physical Education, and Mr Rob Moffat. Mr Moffat was previously the coach of the Edinburgh professional team and has also worked with Scotland age group sides. He has an outstanding reputation within Scottish rugby. As well as working with the 1sts, he also regularly assists the coaches of younger sides during the week. The school is lucky to have a high number of talented and dedicated coaches and the aim is to give every interested youngster the opportunity to develop their skills and maximise their ability, whether in an A team or a B team.
There are regular tours at home and abroad and the senior side toured Italy at Easter 2012. A tour to South Africa is planned for Easter 2013. Recent visitors to the school have included Scotland scrummaging coach Massimo Cuttita (August 2011), Scotland’s most capped player Chris Patterson (October 2011), Scotland backs coach Gregor Townsend (November 2011) and Samoan international Freddie Tuilagi (January 2012) who took a junior coaching session.
