DIVING
One of the prime purposes of the trip is to give pupils the opportunity to dive in the coral reefs round Tioman Island. We spend the second week on Aur Island and usually manage to complete seven or eight dives to depths of up to 25 metres. For most pupils, this is the highlight of the trip. Pupils also sit the PADI Open Water assessment and receive certification to permit them to dive anywhere in the world. The certificates are sent to the school around Christmas and presented at morning Assembly.
Prior to departure, the group is given a taster course in sub-aqua diving at Dollar:
Forth Valley Sub-Aqua Club meets in the Dollar Academy pool every Tuesday night from 7.00pm to 9.30pm, and in the past have given our pupils very valuable diving practice prior to our trip. Changes to Health and Safety regulations result in pupils having to join the club for one year. The cost to join the club is £37.75, which is in addition to the total cost of the trip.
Pupils will be given lectures on dive theory, and must pass a written exam on this when they arrive in Aur Island in July. They will also be given at least three practice dives in the swimming pool, with full kit, to familiarise them with various techniques, such as controlling buoyancy, emptying facemasks and sharing air.
Pupils are reminded that they are members of the FVSAC and can join the Club activities on Tuesday evenings during the summer term and beyond.
