Classics Trip to Hadrian’s Wall: Photography Competition
As always there was a competitive edge to the recent highly successful trip to Hadrian’s Wall. The Classics Department runs an annual photography competition, in which each pupil is entitled to enter his/her best three shots. All round Housesteads Fort, at Vindolanda, and on the classic three-mile stretch between Houseteads and Steelrigg, pupils could be observed patiently and painstakingly considering photographic possibilities. This year, there was an increased number of entries, making the judge’s decision a difficult one. In reverse order, the three winners were:
3rd Prize: Aileen Gray (IRD)
2nd Prize: Euan Johnstone (1MR)
1st Prize: Alyson McGinlay (1MR)
This is nothing if not a “wall” shot. The photographer has shown a real awareness of the importance of lines, and there is drive and energy in the composition, as the wall stretches out into the wilderness beyond. Human figures are present, but they are dwarfed by the wall’s sheer size. This is a worthy winner.
